Islam is the biggest supporter of education in general and Islamic education in particular. Evidence of this enthusiastic support of Islam is evident from the first revelation where the teaching of the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) began with “Iqra” which means reading. Therefore, Islam has been a supporter of education from the beginning, and what book can be better than the Holy Quran which is the word of Allah. Therefore, a Muslim need to educate himself about the Quran more than anything else.

Quran – the ultimate source of knowledge

The reason why a Muslim should focus on educating himself about the Quran over all the other books of knowledge is that the Quran is the divine source of knowledge, a book that comes directly from Allah, whose wisdom and knowledge is unparalleled. Moreover, the Holy Quran provides awareness of things and their realities as well as presents the right path by which a Muslim can rise up and deserve the blessings of Allah Ta’ala.

Study of Quran – A duty

Since the Quran contains instructions from Allah, educating oneself about the Quran is one of the primary responsibilities of a Muslim. It is the duty of parents to help their children learn the Quran so that they have a strong foundation on which they can grow and become better Muslims. Therefore, for the better life of your children here and in the hereafter, you need to put Quranic education for them at the top of the list of priorities.

What does the Quran say about education?

Islam has attached great importance to education since its inception and has enjoyed a long and rich intellectual tradition. Knowledge (ILM) holds an important place within Islam, as evidenced by the more than 800 references to it in Islam’s most revered book, the Quran. The importance of education is repeatedly emphasized in the Quran with commands such as “God will exalt among you those who believe and have knowledge” (58:11),

“O my Lord! increase in knowledge” (20:114),

and “as God taught him, let him write” (2:282).

Such verses provide a strong motivation for the Islamic community to strive for education and learning.

Islamic education is uniquely different from other types of educational theory and practice largely because of the universal influence of the Quran. The Quran serves as a comprehensive blueprint and primary source of knowledge for both the individual and society. The arrival of the Quran in the 7th century was revolutionary enough for the largely illiterate Arab society. Arab society enjoyed a rich oral tradition, but the Quran was considered the Word of God, and its words needed to be formally communicated through reading and recitation. Therefore, reading and writing was the desire of most Muslims for the purpose of accessing the full blessings of the Quran. Thus, education in Islam implicitly derives from a symbiotic relationship with religious education.

Importance of education in Islam

Education has been greatly emphasized in Islam. The first verse of the Quran to be revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) indicates the importance of education in Islam; the verse started with the word “Iqra”, it is a command that means ‘read’ in Arabic, and that implies the concepts of ‘learning’, ‘exploring’ and ‘seeking enlightenment. This demonstrates that reading (knowledge) is the way to approach the Creator of all that exists.

Verse 96/1-5 states:

“Read! In the Name of your Lord who has created (all that exists). He created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood). Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous. Who has taught (the writing) by the pen? He has taught man that which he knew not. “

Hence, Muslims believe that Allah created humanity and commanded that they seek knowledge in order to become stronger in their faith.

The importance of education has been emphasized repeatedly in the Quran, which is the ultimate source of guidance for Muslims.

Verse 20/114 says, “My Lord! Increase me in knowledge.” This verse indicates that whatever we know is limited as we need to keep asking Allah to increase our knowledge. Therefore, a Muslim should constantly be seeking more knowledge (ILM). The Quran treats knowledge as a means to reaching Iman (faith) for all Muslims, males, and females, to become true believers. This is demonstrated in the following verses:

” Allah grants wisdom to whom He pleases and to whom wisdom is granted indeed he receives an overflowing benefit.” Surah 2/269

“Those truly fear God, among His Servants, who have knowledge: for God is Exalted in Might, Oft-Forgiving.” Surah 35/28”

“Are those equal, those who know and those who do not know? It is those who are endowed with understanding that receives admonition.” Surah 39/9

The hadith of the Prophet (PBUH) also emphasize the value of knowledge. As the following hadith narrated by Abu Hurairah notes:

“When a man dies, his acts come to an end, but three, recurring charity, or knowledge (by which people) benefit, or a pious son, who prays for him (the deceased).” (Sahih Muslim: Book 12, Hadith 4005).

Therefore, in the Quran and hadith, the importance of education is explicit; in Islam seeking education is obligatory, and that knowledge is considered to be the path towards greater closeness to Allah.

Why Education of the Quran Is Important?

The importance of the Quran is well understood when we understand the purpose of this holy book. All the prophets who have been sent by Allah Ta’ala consider one reason as their purpose and mission, that is the guidance of mankind. With each prophet and messenger, the commandments and instructions that God sent with the previous messenger would be fulfilled, as were the books revealed to each prophet. Therefore, the purpose of every holy book can be stated as follows:

Confirmation and completion of preceding books

Guidance for humanity

Since God intended to guide mankind, it is logical that He sent a book along with religion so that people could receive orders and guidance from it. By this, we can better understand the importance of the Quran. The Quran, which is the last holy scripture revealed to the last prophet, is both guidance and confirmation as stated in the book itself. If God had not sent down a book containing all his commandments and instructions, then the guidance of mankind would have been useless. Then, when a person embarks on the path of monotheism and seeks guidance, he will need a book whose authenticity and consistency are reliable for reference.

Another aspect that highlights the importance of the Quran as an extraordinary book is that it is the last of its kind and the most complete and comprehensive of all divine scriptures. The Quran is the last and most recent version of all divine books, so Islam is the last religion sent by God to guide mankind.

Those who believed in the previous prophets acted according to the duty that was incumbent on them at that time, so with the revelation of Islam and the revelation of the Quran, this responsibility rests with those who followed the previous prophets. And they received the good news. The last messenger and his holy book to answer this call and accept God’s last invitation. This shows the importance of the Quran.

What does Islam think about education?

Education is the key to balancing personality development by training oneself to be spiritual, intellectual, and rational. Education is the path that connects your personality to the pure soul, so education in Islam means acquiring divine knowledge. Knowledge in Islam means the process of education. Knowledge is not only limited to knowledge but also has to do with moral aspects. Education plays an important role in Islam which helps you to retain knowledge. It is a way of spreading the faith among the diverse people of the world. It is the only means of spreading knowledge and virtue in the universe.

The basic teaching of Islam exemplified by our Prophet is faith in Allah (S.W.T). Islam also preserves the signs of the existence of our Almighty Allah. Thus, Islamic seekers teach us the importance of education and knowledge in Islam. Our Prophet said to acquire knowledge and be patient to learn more. Therefore, Important of Sunnah is the first key to following the Islamic path. Along with the learning of the Quran, the values of the Sunnah are also paid.

The first word of the Holy Quran that was revealed by Allah to Muhammad (PBUH) is ‘Iqra’, which means to read. And the whole Quran is about Allah’s teaching about guiding the way of life of the believers. Therefore, there are different chapters related to knowledge in hadiths. Therefore, Muslim scholars say that education is the essence of knowledge. Moreover, it is the means through which a person can strengthen his faith and belief. Hence, it also helps you to acquire the necessary knowledge.

Hadith is a book that contains all the teachings of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). It is therefore one of the most important sources of religious law and provides moral guidance. It describes the life of our Prophet and contains his teachings. Moreover, it teaches us obedience, and moral values, and guides us to become spiritual people. We can infer the arrival of the Sunnah from the hadiths. The reading of hadiths gradually became a means of rapid geographical expansion for the believers.

Knowledge is the path of guidance that helps you develop faith within yourself. Therefore, education is the right of every man and woman. Therefore, education has an important status and has played an important role in Islam since its inception.

The most important point is that it teaches you to respect everyone. Allah (S.W.T) is our creator. He created nature, gave us wisdom, and commanded us to act accordingly. Islam teaches us to start our day with gratitude to our Creator. You should learn and understand the teachings of the Quran and Hadith.

Islam has a holistic view of human development, which places education and knowledge at the center. Islam encourages acquiring knowledge and using it for the good of humanity.
